Earlier this month, at the State of Unreal show, CDPR officially showed the new explorable area Kovir in The Witcher 4 for the first time through technical demonstration screens, as well as the new look of the protagonist Ciri, and also showed many features implemented by the Unreal 5 engine.
Recently, in an interview with the media, Charles Tremblay, vice president of technology at CDPR, said that the studio learned from the lessons of Cyberpunk 2077 and decided to adopt a "console-first" development strategy. Tremblay said frankly: "In the past, we always made the PC version first and then adapted it to the console, which caused many problems. This time we are determined to truly implement the console-first development concept." "Cyberpunk 2077" was a disaster when it was released in 2020, especially on the last-generation consoles PS4/Xbox One. It was once removed from the PlayStation Store and a refund channel was opened. But CDPR made it clear that it would not repeat the same mistake with "The Witcher 4".
Global Art Director Jakub Knapik explained that console-based development can make the PC version "scale up" more smoothly. Knapik said: "After establishing a good visual and technical foundation, there is room for upward expansion. As a company that started with PC games, we always pursue the limits of hardware-the key is how to achieve this creatively." However, Charles Tremblay also admitted that achieving 60 frames on the Xbox Series S is "definitely a huge challenge", and the team is actively seeking solutions.
Despite the console-first strategy, Tremblay assured that PC players will still get an experience that matches their hardware: "We will never let high-end hardware users get a watered-down experience. The company originated on the PC platform and will definitely provide the best experience for PC players, but the specific plan is still early." The release date of "The Witcher 4" has not yet been announced. CDPR is also developing projects such as the sequel to "Cyberpunk 2077" and the remake of "The Witcher".
