No longer sticking to 3A? Techland plans to release a new game every 3-4 years

Jun 19, 2025

At this year's Summer Game Festival, the media interviewed Tymon Smektala, the director of the "Dying Light" series, to discuss the upcoming game "Dying Light: The Beast". During the interview, Tymon Smektala told foreign media WCCF that Techland will release games more frequently starting with "Dying Light: The Beast", shortening the average development cycle, and plans to launch a new game (medium-sized?) every 3-4 years, instead of spending a long time to create 3A games as before.

"As a developer, we also want to be aware of this. Because Dying Light 1 and Dying Light 2 took seven years to make. We think that if the approach is slightly different and the focus is clearer, we can release games more frequently. We are currently on a cycle of three to four years, and I think Dying Light: The Beast is the first step in this direction."

In addition, Tymon Smektala also defended the game "Dying Light: The Beast", which was originally planned as DLC for "Dying Light 2".

He said: "I understand why some players think, "Oh, it was just a small DLC at the beginning, and now it's full price. They just want to sell it as the next game." "But really, this is the return of Kyle Crane. The campaign is about the same size as the previous game, and I think it's really the best Dying Light game we've ever made."

Dying Light 2 is scheduled to be released in February 2022, and Dying Light: The Beast is scheduled to be released on August 23, 2025, with a gap of three and a half years in between. More importantly, this strategy is in stark contrast to the regular AAA game development cycle, which is getting longer and longer. Today, a AAA game takes an average of five years or even longer to complete, assuming that there are no major problems throughout the development process.
