"AI Godfather": AI will replace most white-collar jobs, blue-collar jobs may become a safe haven

[CNMO Technology News] Geoffrey Hinton, known as the "AI Godfather", recently warned again about the risks brought by the development of artificial intelligence. He said that the rapid progress of AI has posed a serious threat to human employment, especially a large number of white-collar jobs engaged in "daily intellectual labor", which may be replaced by AI first.

In an interview with the YouTube channel "The Diary of a CEO" podcast, Hinton bluntly pointed out: "For daily intellectual work, AI will replace everyone." The "daily intellectual labor" he refers to includes many white-collar jobs such as legal assistants, copywriting, and administrative support. Hinton pointed out that companies will tend to replace ten employees with one AI assistant to achieve a more efficient and lower-cost operating model.

This is not groundless. In recent months, many companies have laid off employees in the process of reducing operating costs and introduced AI systems to complete some repetitive and rule-based work. Even positions that rely heavily on human communication, such as call centers, have gradually been replaced by automatic voice systems.

However, Hinton also pointed out that AI will not be able to handle positions with complex physical operations in the short term. He said: "It will take a long time for AI to reach the level of humans in physical operations." Therefore, he suggested that those who are worried about being replaced by AI can consider turning to blue-collar jobs with more manual operations such as plumbers and electricians, which are still highly safe and irreplaceable.

Hinton also questioned the optimistic statement that "AI will create more jobs." He believes that as AI gradually takes over knowledge-based jobs, the employment space for humans will become smaller and smaller, especially entry-level jobs have become increasingly difficult to obtain.
