PS6 R&D work has started, and the industry predicts that it will be released around 2028

Jun 25, 2025

On June 24, according to media reports, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino recently publicly confirmed that the R&D work of its new generation game console PlayStation 6 has officially started, and positioned it as a core key project at the current company's strategic level.

The official has not yet announced the specific release time, but combined with previous news, the industry generally expects that this next-generation console is expected to meet consumers around 2028.

Since the current PlayStation 5 console was launched at the end of 2020, its global cumulative sales have exceeded 65 million units, but this product is still in the middle of its life cycle.

Hideaki Nishino made it clear that PS6 will continue to follow the local hardware computing mode of traditional game consoles. He emphasized that this decision is based on in-depth consideration of user experience: "In the actual user scenario, there are many uncontrollable factors in the end-to-end network connection quality, so ensuring that the game runs smoothly on the local device is still the core experience foundation."
