Amazon CEO says it hasn't seen a big price increase due to tariffs

Jul 01, 2025

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in an interview on Monday that the company hasn't seen a big price increase due to tariffs, and explained the mitigation strategies Amazon and its sellers are using.

"A few months ago, we did a lot of forward buying, and then a lot of our sellers, our third-party selling partners forward deployed a lot of inventory to avoid some of the problems that were around the uncertainty of tariffs. So far, we haven't seen a significant increase in prices."

Jassy said Amazon has about 2 million sellers on its marketplace. He said that even if some sellers pass on tariff costs to consumers by raising prices, there will be many sellers who don't do that and "take a piece of the pie and don't raise prices." Jassy added that this diversity in the market helps customers.

He also detailed the ways that artificial intelligence is widely changing business, calling generative AI "the most transformative technology in our lifetime." Jassy said that when a "truly extraordinary and transformative technology" like artificial intelligence comes along, there are two choices -- either embrace the new technology or "hope it goes away and then have it happen to you." He said Amazon chose the former, and he said that historically, the latter has been the better option.

In a recent memo to employees, Jassy said AI will allow Amazon to reduce its headcount. He said in an interview on Monday that AI will reduce employees' workloads and make their jobs more interesting, saying they will all be able to "start each task at a more advanced starting point." He said that hiring related to robots and AI will also increase over time.

AI will not only change the dynamics for employees, but also for customers, Jassy continued. He said widespread adoption of robots among consumers may not be that far off.

"I think that sometime in the next decade or so, many, maybe most consumers will have robots in their homes," Jassy said, "and I think you'll see really great personal assistants like Alexa built into those robots, and she'll be able to help you a lot in your home."
