On August 5th, local time, former Porto's Champions League-winning captain, Jorge Costa, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and tragically passed away at the age of 53.

Costa was being interviewed at Porto's Olivar training base when the incident occurred. At approximately 12:30 pm, the club director requested the crew move indoors due to the scorching weather, but he soon fell into a coma. Porto's medical team immediately administered a defibrillator, and firefighters and the Portuguese National Emergency Medical Team arrived shortly thereafter.

Costa was rushed to the intensive care unit of Porto's São João Hospital in critical condition and tragically passed away that afternoon.

Jorge Costa captained Porto to victory in the Champions League in the 2003-04 season. His career also includes eight Portuguese Primeira Liga titles, five Portuguese Cups, and six Portuguese Super Cups.

Costa Costa began his career at Porto and retired in 2006 with Standard Liège. Before his death, he served as Porto's Director of Football.

Jorge Costa's manager during his Champions League triumph, Mourinho, choked up in a press conference, saying, "He was part of my life story, and now he's drifting away. Some players wear the captain's armband, while others are natural leaders. Jorge was the kind of captain who quietly cleared the mess and allowed me to focus on coaching. He was a coach's dream."
