Trump Administration Freezes $584 Million in Funding for UCLA

Aug 07, 2025

UCLA said the Trump administration has frozen $584 million in federal funding after condemning the university for pro-Palestinian protests.

The Trump administration has been threatening to cut federal funding to universities, accusing them, including UCLA, of tolerating anti-Semitism during the protests.

UCLA also saw large demonstrations last year. Protesters, including some Jewish groups, said the administration wrongly equated their criticism of Israel's military offensive in Gaza and occupation of the Palestinian territories with anti-Semitism and their advocacy for Palestinian rights with support for extremism.

UCLA President Julio Frenk stated on the school's website: "Currently, approximately $584 million in extramural award funds are suspended and at risk."

According to local media reports, UCLA leaders are preparing to negotiate with the administration over the funding freeze.

Last week, the university agreed to pay more than $6 million to settle lawsuits filed by several students and a professor alleging anti-Semitism. Earlier this year, the school was also sued for assaulting pro-Palestinian protesters in 2024, at the height of the protest movement on US campuses.

In recent weeks, the Trump administration reached settlements with Columbia University and Brown University, with the former agreeing to pay $220 million and the latter $50 million. Both schools accepted certain government demands. Settlement negotiations with Harvard University are ongoing.

The Trump administration has also sought to deport foreign student protesters, but faces legal obstacles. A Stanford University student-run newspaper sued the Trump administration on Wednesday, alleging that student writers are self-censoring and rejecting work related to Gaza to avoid being targeted for deportation.
