Earth's Secret Companions: Two "Invisible Companions" Silently Orbiting for Billions of Years

Aug 08, 2025

The companionship of Earth and the Moon in the vast universe is well known, and this billions-year-long friendship has long been a topic of discussion among astronomy enthusiasts. However, a recent discovery has added a new chapter to this ancient cosmic story.

Astronomers have revealed that in addition to the Moon, Earth's long-standing companion, there are two other unsung "followers" quietly orbiting Earth. This news immediately garnered widespread attention and discussion. After all, the Moon, Earth's only natural satellite, has long been a focal point of our nightly gazes at the stars with its brilliant light, while these two newly discovered "companions" seem to have remained hidden, remaining only recently visible to human telescopes.

One of these "new companions," named 2016 HO3, is an asteroid. It was first discovered in late April 2016 by the Pan-STARRS survey telescope in Hawaii. This asteroid's trajectory is quite peculiar, orbiting the Sun and Earth in a complex dance. Due to its irregular orbit and relatively long distance from Earth, it crosses Earth's orbital plane twice a year.

After careful calculations, astronomers were surprised to discover that this asteroid has been quietly accompanying Earth for nearly a century and is expected to continue this journey for hundreds of years to come. Although not officially a satellite of Earth, the designation "quasi-satellite" is quite apt.

Another "newcomer" is 2023 FW13, discovered using the Pan-STARRS telescope atop Haleakala volcano in Hawaii. Experts suggest that this object has been orbiting Earth since as early as 100 BC and is expected to continue orbiting for at least 1,500 years.

Unlike the Moon, 2023 FW13's orbit is well beyond Earth's "Hill sphere." While Earth's Hill sphere has a radius of approximately 932,000 miles, 2023 FW13 is approximately 1.6 million miles away. Their orbits are so long that one end nearly touches Mars, the other nears Venus.

These two newly discovered "companions" have redefined our understanding of the universe. While the Earth and Moon's companionship was already miraculous enough, we never imagined these two mysterious guests, hidden in the distant corners of the sky, journeying through the universe alongside them in their own unique ways. In the quiet of the night, one can't help but wonder: if they could speak, perhaps they would share even more fascinating stories about the universe.

This discovery has undoubtedly ignited people's passion and curiosity for cosmic exploration. How many untold secrets await our discovery in the vast universe? Perhaps it is precisely these unknowns that make the universe's mystery and allure even more captivating.
