As AI (artificial intelligence) becomes a mainstream technological trend, how humans can effectively utilize it has become a global concern. Canadian scientist and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Geoffrey Hinton, often dubbed the "Godfather of AI," has predicted that AI's intelligence will soon surpass that of humans, further leading to mass unemployment and a widening wealth gap.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Hinton stated that compared to humans' limited understanding of their own brains, given that AI's operation of every neuron is handcrafted by humans, he estimates that AI intelligence will completely surpass that of humans within the next five to twenty years. This statement has been echoed by many scientists.
Hinton, a renowned computer scientist, has focused much of his public speeches on AI since resigning from Google in May 2023. He frequently warns of the risks of AI misuse and has repeatedly called for global research on AI safety to be a top priority.
Speaking of concerns that AI tools will cause humans to lose their inherent creativity, Hinton frankly admitted he wasn't worried. While recognizing the value of AI, he reiterated that the priority should be "maintaining dominance." He further cited the mother-child relationship as an example, arguing that the relationship humans should pursue is "making AI the mother." This way, AI will be based on the principle of "caring for the infant (human), protecting the infant's life, and focusing on its growth," reducing the risk of backlash and escaping human control during optimization.
Hinton further pointed out that while many people incorporate AI into their visions of tackling hunger, poverty, and even disease, he believes this is merely a "utopian" blueprint. As AI advances, it will only cause mass unemployment by replacing workers. Reduced costs and increased profits will make the rich richer and the poor poorer, "widening the wealth gap."
As for whether AI is the culprit behind the widening wealth gap and mass unemployment, Hinton emphasized that "it's the capitalist system's fault."
When asked about his expectations for the development of AI, Hinton believes that "healthcare" and "education" are the next areas where breakthroughs are likely to occur. He bluntly stated that humanity is at a turning point in history. Although it is difficult to predict the outcome, the only certainty is that "the status quo will not remain unchanged."
