US President Trump tweeted on Monday (October 6th) that Takaichi Sanae, Japan's likely first female prime minister, is "a highly respected person of great wisdom and strength."
U.S. Treasury Secretary Jeffrey Bessant later congratulated Takaichi Sanae on becoming the new president of the Liberal Democratic Party, saying he agreed with Trump that it was "incredible news" and expressed hope to work with her cabinet on "economic and national security issues of mutual interest."
Bessant retweeted a screenshot of Trump's post on X and said, "Throughout her impressive career, she has proven herself to be a strong leader, policymaker, and communicator, and will be a valuable partner in deepening the U.S.-Japan relationship."
Trump said on Truth Social, "Japan just elected its first female prime minister."
Kyodo News described Takaichi Sanae as a staunch conservative who shares many of the same views as the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on history, national security, and economic issues. And during Trump's first term, his personal relationship with Shinzo Abe was one of the best among world leaders.
