Nvidia (NVDA.US) has essentially confirmed that its latest AI accelerator chip, the GB300, will utilize Samsung's fifth-generation, high-bandwidth HBM3E technology. This means that after many setbacks, Samsung has finally secured access to Nvidia's supply chain.
Sources revealed that Nvidia's CEO recently sent a formal letter to Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong confirming that the GB300 chip will utilize Samsung's 12-layer HBM3E technology. The two parties are currently in final negotiations on supply quantity, price, and timeline.
Micron Technology, already a key supplier of Nvidia's HBM solutions (including HBM3E), saw its stock price fall 3% in afternoon trading on Thursday. SK Hynix is another important memory chip supplier for Nvidia.
Samsung has reportedly been working for over a year to obtain Nvidia certification for its HBM3E chip. Currently, the AI hardware industry has gradually shifted to the sixth-generation HBM4 chip. Therefore, the number of HBM3E chips supplied by Samsung this time will not be too large, but it is also of milestone significance and is expected to accelerate the mass production and certification of HBM4.
