In a recent interview, Nate Fox and Jason Cornell, co-creative directors of Ghost of Yōtei, revealed details of the new gameplay, including non-linear plot design. Since the release of the first trailer in 2024, developer Sucker Punch has been tight-lipped about the new game, but with the official announcement of the release date, more information has gradually surfaced.
As players are eager to get new information, Sucker Punch seems to have entered a new stage of development. The game is confirmed to be released in October, and more details are beginning to emerge: players will have a deeper understanding of the background of the protagonist "Atsu" and his revenge goals, and the studio will also introduce a non-linear plot for the first time in this series-players can freely choose the order of the crucifixion of the "Six Gods" and use new melee weapons such as the sickle. In addition, the scale of the map of this game will be the largest in the history of Sucker Punch.
Similar to the development of Ghost of Tsushima, Fox and Cornell traveled to Japan to research and consult experts to ensure the accurate representation of Ainu culture (covering modern Hokkaido). Cornell not only visited museums and folk craft exhibitions, but also went deep into the mountains to experience picking wild vegetables. Although the two have already served as tourism ambassadors for Tsushima Island, this additional research on Ainu culture may avoid the controversy caused by Ubisoft's development of Assassin's Creed Shadows.
Although Ghost of Yōtei is still a few months away from release, player enthusiasm continues to rise. In addition to the stunning real-life graphics in the release day trailer, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida also praised the game: "Sucker Punch's games always achieve a smooth and non-stuttering experience in the early stages of development." He revealed that every time he visited the studio, the production team would actively seek his feedback on the feel of the game.
