Stonemaier Games is suing Trump against tariffs that threaten the tabletop gaming industry

The U.S. government’s recent tariff policy continues to impact various industries, with the tabletop gaming industry being hit particularly hard. Stonemaier Games, the publisher of "wingspan" and "Scythe", has become the latest board game company to publicly protest. Its founder Jamey Stegmaier announced in an official statement that he would join the joint lawsuit against the US President:

"When our livelihoods and the rights of thousands of small business owners, contractors and consumers in the United States to pursue happiness are used as political pawns, we will never remain silent. Like other board game publishers, we started printing products before the inauguration of the current president. Now, for every $10 in production costs invested by Chinese partners, a tariff of $14.5 will be paid. Our company, whose eight employees are all American citizens, will face a tariff bill of nearly $1.5 million."

According to Stegmaier, the case will be formally submitted this week. The plaintiffs come from multiple industries directly affected by tariffs. The core dispute is the president's unilateral imposition of tariffs.

Faced with a 145% punitive tariff, Stonemaier is taking a multi-pronged approach to deal with the crisis:

  • Expanding sales in markets outside Europe and the United States
  • Temporarily storing products originally destined for the United States in Chinese warehouses
  • Maintaining restocking of out-of-stock products at its own expense
  • Digesting the inventory of the new work "Vantage" through direct sales channels

The United States has almost no mass production capacity for tabletop games, and Chinese manufacturing has long supported this creative industry. Companies such as Greater Than Games have gone bankrupt due to tariffs, and this case may determine the survival of hundreds of small creative companies.
