Google to stop supporting earlier Nest thermostats on October 25

Apr 27, 2025

Google announced this week that it will no longer support and release software updates for the first and second generation Nest Learning Thermostats starting October 25. In addition, Google will stop launching new Nest products in Europe altogether.

This means that users of Nest thermostats released in 2011 and 2012 (and users of the 2014 version released in Europe) will no longer receive updates, and their devices will no longer be supported by the Nest app and the Home app. They will still be able to adjust the temperature and set schedules directly on the device, however.

Google said: "In order to fully invest in (future) technological advancements and bring you the latest cutting-edge features on our latest generation of Nest thermostats, we will phase out support for our three oldest devices, each of which is more than ten years old." As for why the Nest thermostat will no longer be launched in Europe, the company added: "European heating systems are unique, with a variety of hardware and software requirements, which makes it challenging to build products for different types of homes." Existing Nest devices will continue to be sold in Europe until they are sold out.
