According to recent reports, screenshots from the development of Rare Studios' canceled multiplayer game, Everwild, have recently surfaced online.

Since its 2019 debut, Everwild has been highly anticipated and considered a major project for Xbox's Rare Studios. Despite a long period of silence regarding the forest-themed multiplayer online game, officials have consistently stated that development is continuing. However, due to Microsoft's wave of layoffs, several projects, including the Perfect Dark reboot, Project Blackbird, and Everwild, were ultimately shelved. Recently, a highly credible report has revealed several never-before-seen screenshots of the game's gameplay and interface design.

These images, sourced from the personal websites of artists involved in the project, depict images close to the final state of the project before its cancellation. While the screenshots primarily showcase the interface design, other elements are glimpsed: one scene, following the trailer's distinctive visual style, shows the player character standing beside a stone circle adorned with mysterious symbols; another depicts a temple-like structure. Regarding the interface design, the inventory details six categories: Collections, Souls, Tools, Inlays, Seeds, and Plants. Beyond the standard tools and quick collections, the remaining sections offer more insightful information.

The "Souls" tab displays colorful miniature creatures, including one clearly labeled "Light Souls," hinting at a system for collecting and utilizing creatures. The "Inlays" tab is equally suggestive, featuring inlays depicting motifs like the deer-like creatures seen in the trailer, potentially serving as a decorative element. In another screenshot, the "Plants" tab (sometimes labeled "Seeds") clearly displays various planting materials, including shrub seeds, hinting at a botanical encyclopedia system.

The website also mentions that Rare originally planned to leverage player data from Sea of Thieves to build Everwild's settings system. According to the designers, this was intended to accurately capture the most frequently adjusted game configurations.

With Everwild's demise, Rare's future direction remains uncertain. Some original project members (excluding those laid off) may transfer to the Sea of Thieves team, injecting new life into the live-service game. It's worth noting that Rare also co-developed the canceled Xbox game Perfect Dark.
