OpenAI releases ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered browser, in direct competition with Google.

Oct 22, 2025

OpenAI has released its first AI-powered web browser, marking a new front in the competition between the developer of ChatGPT and Alphabet's Google.

ChatGPT Atlas aims to provide a more personalized online experience and can also perform tasks on behalf of users, such as booking flights and editing documents. Whenever users visit a webpage, an "Ask ChatGPT" option appears on the interface, allowing them to interact with the page content in a sidebar. For example, users can open a movie review and ask ChatGPT to summarize it, or browse a recipe and ask ChatGPT to help them order ingredients online.

"This is an AI browser built around ChatGPT," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said during a livestream event on Tuesday. He called AI "a once-in-a-decade opportunity" to rethink the meaning of the browser.

OpenAI said Atlas will initially be available globally on macOS, with plans to expand to Windows, iOS, and Android "soon." Currently, more advanced AI agent features will only be available to paid ChatGPT Plus and Pro users.
